After Mexico’s national and local election in June, a lot of people decided and confronted offices across the nation to adapt hands during October. On the tourism front, one of them is the departure of Michelle Fridman,
who is the Secretary of tourism for the State of Yucatán.
As she looks forward, Fridman is reviewing Yucatán’s extension improvement. According to the recent figures that the State of Mexico published, it stated that “the number of overnight visitors in Yucatan jumped by 4.3% between January and June 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, with a 1.7% increase for domestic visitors and an especially impressive 15.3% for international visitors. The city of Merida experienced a similar surge in international visitors in the first half of 2024.”
Infrastructure and services in Yucatan, meantime, are changing to provide upgraded demand. According to TravelAge West, “Between 2022 and 2024, for example, more than 50 hotels have opened around the state, adding more than 800 rooms to hotel inventory. And a recent expansion of Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport in Merida, the state capital, has doubled its capacity to 4.7 million passengers annually.”
The airport adjusted to make a better arrangement for Viva Aerobus, a concession transporter combined with a hub in Merida, to gain its residence in the destination, a strategy that involves new resources to many cities in the United States. The airline appeared new flight destination to connect Merida with Miami and Orlando, Florida during the Summer season in 2024 and planned to arrange other services between Los Angeles International Airport and Merida on December 18. Additionally, the carrier’s recent flight between Merida and Tijuana, which already started on November 3 showed visitors in Southern California who operated the Cross Border Xpress.
Predictions for the Future
Recent airline service is one of the majority reasons why Fridman is very positive about the extension of tourism progress in Yucatán where she wants to move forward to review Yucatán’s tourism sector in an optimistic direction.
“The increase in air and sea connectivity with the U.S. has been constant and allowed us to grow year after year, both in the number of overnight visitors and excursionists, as well as in the economic impact of tourism and average daily spending per passenger,” said Fridman. “We are sure that demand will continue to grow, with the help of many entrepreneurs who continue to invest and increase the hotel, restaurant and unforgettable experience offerings."
