King Charles Confirms Decision on Republic Rests with Australian People
King Charles has reiterated that the choice between Australia remaining a constitutional monarchy or transitioning to a republic is entirely up to the Australian people.
Ahead of his upcoming visit to Australia, the Australian Republic Movement engaged in correspondence with Buckingham Palace, requesting clarification on the King’s stance regarding the country's future governance. In response, palace officials, writing on behalf of the King, affirmed that "whether Australia becomes a republic is a matter for the Australian public to decide."
This restatement of the longstanding position came ahead of King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Sydney and Canberra. While the palace's letter, first reported by the Daily Mail, doesn't mark a shift in policy, it does emphasize that the King continues to act on the advice of his Ministers. The letter further expressed the King’s deep affection for Australia, acknowledging the sentiments shared by the Australian Republic Movement.
No Shift in Policy
The palace's response remains consistent with past statements on this issue. The letter, written in March, noted that the King “acts on the advice of his Ministers, and whether Australia becomes a republic is therefore a matter for the Australian public to decide.” It also added that the King and Queen hold a deep love for Australia, and the movement’s engagement on the issue was “warmly appreciated.”
Australia last held a referendum on becoming a republic in 1999, during which the majority voted to maintain its status as a constitutional monarchy. Earlier this year, the Australian government declared that plans for another referendum were “not a priority.” However, republic campaigners continue to argue that Australia's head of state should be an Australian citizen, elected by the people.
Campaign for Change
Isaac Jeffrey, spokesperson for the Australian Republic Movement, reinforced the call for a locally elected head of state. He stated that the movement respects the role the royals have played but believes it is time for Australia to have a head of state who can work for the country full time.
While the campaign praises King Charles as an individual, it opposes the institution of the monarchy in Australia. Jeffrey also mentioned that they are eager to convey that becoming a republic is about the nation’s future, rather than a personal stance against the royal family.
King's Upcoming Visit
The upcoming royal visit, from October 18 to 26, will mark King Charles’ most extensive trip since his cancer diagnosis earlier this year. His itinerary includes reviewing Australia’s naval fleet in Sydney harbor, attending a community barbecue, supporting environmental projects, and meeting award-winning cancer researchers. Following his stay in Australia, the King will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa.
In December, King Charles will also host the Amir of Qatar for a state visit to the UK.
