Two children have been killed and nine others injured, including six critically, in a "ferocious" knife attack at a children's dance workshop. The incident occurred during a Taylor Swift themed event on Hart Street in Southport, where two adults also sustained critical injuries while attempting to protect the children. Merseyside Police reported that a 17 year old boy from Banks, Lancashire, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Although the motive for the attack remains unclear, it is not being treated as terror related.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 11:47 BST, during the first full week of the school summer holidays in the UK. Armed response vehicles, 13 ambulances, and the fire service arrived promptly at the dance class, attended by children aged six to ten. Chief Constable Serena Kennedy described the scene as shocking, with multiple victims, including children, suffering serious injuries from the attack.
Witnesses described the scene as "horrendous," with many in tears, including emergency responders. Alder Hey Children's Hospital and North West Ambulance Service declared a "major incident," treating and transporting 11 casualties to various hospitals. The Great North Air Ambulance Service also provided critical care.
Colin Parry, a nearby business owner, recounted seeing a young man in a green hoodie causing a commotion before the attack and later witnessing numerous bleeding children. The local community responded quickly, with neighbors helping to evacuate and protect the children.
The King and the prime minister have led tributes to the victims, expressing their "heartfelt condolences" to those affected. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the nation's shock and grief, commending the emergency services for their response.
Merseyside Police confirmed they are not seeking any other suspects and have received support from Counter Terrorism Police North West, although the incident is not currently being treated as error-related. The investigation continues as the 17 year old suspect, born in Cardiff, is questioned by detectives.
In response to the tragedy, Southport FC canceled a pre season match and opened its lounge for community support. Everton and Liverpool football clubs also offered their condolences. Local officials, including the Home Secretary and the mayor of Liverpool City Region, have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
A group of Taylor Swift fans, "Swifties for Southport," initiated a fundraiser to support the victims and their families, aiming to alleviate financial stress. Cristina Jones, representing the group, expressed their desire to provide some relief during this difficult time.
