In Kerala, during the British Raj in India, Karanavar was a man of great wealth and influence, celebrated for his power and affluence. His life however took a grim turn when he became infatuated with a beautiful dancer named Nagavalli, whom he met at a function in Tamil Nadu.

When Karanavar proposed marriage to Nagavalli and she refused, he abducted her and took her to his mansion. Imprisoned though, he gave her all that she could wish for: gold, silver, and above all the freedom to dance as before. In due course, Karanavar and Nagavalli grew closer and she would dance for his guests.

Yet, the other wives of Karanavar were smitten with jealousy and started to plot against Nagavalli. Matters became even more tense when Karanavar announced that his wealth would be given to any child he and Nagavalli had. Inflamed with anger and jealousy, his wives and their children hatched a plan to get rid of Karanavar and Nagavalli.

One fateful night, they infiltrated the mansion and committed a heinous murder. In their brutality, they left Nagavalli’s face and body so mutilated that she became unrecognizable. The British authorities stepped in, exacting punishment on the perpetrators, yet the tragedy lingered on.

The incident has now grown into a legend and has become the subject of films and stories. Her spirit, Nagavalli, haunts the mansion seeking justice for her untimely death.

Director P. Vasu enacted this haunting tale in the Tamil film Chandramukhi in the year 2005. Though it drew its inspiration from the Nagavalli folklore, it incorporated many elements of the fantastic and psychological drama. The sad story of Nagavalli was enacted through a character called Chandramukhi, whose spirit haunted a locked-up room in the mansion.

The movie combined mystery and horror as Nagavalli was shown to be a dancer who sought revenge. However, it also smartly weaved in a psychological element wherein the haunting was revealed to be a dissociative identity disorder in the character Ganga. This plot twist made Chandramukhi join the ranks of cult classics, blending traditional folklore with a psychological standpoint.

In 2007, Priyadarshan transformed Chandramukhi into Bhool Bhulaiyaa, merging elements of horror, comedy, and psychological suspense. Situated within a North Indian palace, the plot centred on Manjulika, a reinterpretation of Nagavalli, who was known to haunt a sealed room.

Vidya Balan, renowned for her performance, depicted a character struggling with dissociative identity disorder, embodying Manjulika's essence. The storyline preserved the fundamental characteristics of Chandramukhi while appealing to Bollywood aesthetics, with comedic moments contributed by Akshay Kumar and Rajpal Yadav.

It told the story of jealousy, betrayal, and revenge while infusing psychological realism into the supernatural elements. These factors made Bhool Bhulaiyaa a blockbuster and an instant modern classic.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which came in 2024, completes the circle. Helmed by Anees Bazmee, it saw the return of Kartik Aaryan as Rooh Baba, a paranormal investigator based in modern times. While its predecessors never relied strongly on supernatural elements, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 did, bringing back with full force the haunting legend of Manjulika.

The story explored those aspects of Manjulika's life which were left untouched and traced it back to her roots as Nagavalli. It dealt in more depth with the themes of punishment and justice, using the haunting as a manifestation of longing and painful memories. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 introduced more characters and plotlines, but its core remained the tragedy that had consistently been that of Nagavalli, thereby rooted in folkloric lore and modern horror.
