Public Outcry Grows as Activist Arrest Sparks Nationwide Protests

Kenyan lawyer and activist David Morara Kebaso has sparked public outrage after appearing in court for alleged cyber harassment, following his dramatic arrest in Nairobi. The 28 year old activist, known for his outspoken online campaign against government corruption, was arrested by masked police who confiscated his electronics, drawing widespread condemnation from activists and citizens alike.

Arrest and Charges

Kebaso, who has amassed a significant social media following for exposing alleged corruption and misuse of public funds, was detained by authorities on Monday evening. He faces accusations of tarnishing the reputation of businessman David Langat in a post on X (formerly Twitter), which also referenced President William Ruto. His arrest has come just months after deadly youth-led anti-government protests in response to proposed tax hikes that were later scrapped by the president.

Public Backlash and Activism

The arrest of Kebaso has ignited a firestorm of support on social media, with the hashtag trending as Kenyans demand his release. His social media activism, which often involves documenting stalled government projects and calling for accountability, has attracted over 200,000 followers and has brought him into direct conflict with powerful government and business figures.

Despite threats and surveillance, Kebaso remains defiant, stating, "What I am doing is extremely risky... but I must continue."

Court Appearance and Legal Battle

Kebaso was brought to court the day after his arrest, where he faced cyber harassment charges. However, his lawyers dismissed the charges as defective, arguing that the case involved defamation, a civil matter, rather than a criminal act. The court has released Kebaso on cash bail while it reviews the legality of the charge sheet.

Activists have already begun mobilizing for further protests, and Amnesty International has condemned his arrest, calling it "a blatant misuse of the criminal justice system."

Tensions Continue to Rise

As the legal battle unfolds, Kebaso’s supporters and human rights organizations continue to rally behind him, protesting outside the court and demanding his immediate release. With tensions mounting and the possibility of larger demonstrations looming, the case highlights the growing conflict between free speech advocates and the government in Kenya.

Kebaso’s fearless activism and his willingness to challenge authority have made him a symbol of resistance in Kenya, but the risks he faces are becoming increasingly severe as the government tightens its grip on dissent.
