US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle has resigned after facing intense scrutiny over the handling of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Cheatle, who testified for nearly six hours before a contentious House committee hearing, acknowledged the security lapses during the incident at Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In her resignation letter, she accepted full responsibility, stating her decision was made to prevent further distractions from the agency's critical mission. Both Democrats and Republicans had urged her to step down following the shooting, which resulted in one death and two injuries, including a bullet grazing Trump’s ear.

Bipartisan Criticism and House Committee Hearing

Lawmakers from both parties expressed frustration during the hearing, as Cheatle refrained from providing detailed answers about the security failures. Representative James Comer and Representative Jamie Raskin, the leading Republican and Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter post hearing urging her resignation. Cheatle admitted the shooting represented a significant operational failure but defended her record and commitment to the agency. Despite her efforts, she faced mounting pressure and acknowledged the intense scrutiny over the past week would likely persist, further complicating the Secret Service's operations.

Presidential Response and Future Leadership

President Joe Biden expressed gratitude for Cheatle’s decades of public service and emphasized the importance of the ongoing independent review to understand the security breach fully. Biden assured that a new director would be appointed soon to lead the agency forward. Former President Trump criticized the Biden administration for the security lapse, while House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed Cheatle’s resignation, highlighting the need to restore public trust in the Secret Service. The incident has prompted a renewed focus on strengthening the agency’s protective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
