After seven years without a new mainline entry, Koei Tecmo has returned with Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a fresh take on the long-running action franchise that pioneered the "1 vs 1,000" gameplay style. The game marks a major turning point for the series, as it abandons the traditional numbering system and embraces a new approach powered by next-generation hardware. Originally, developer Omega Force had been working on Dynasty Warriors 10, but after evaluating fan feedback and industry advancements, the team decided to scrap the sequel in favor of a complete reinvention.
The decision to start over was largely influenced by the reception of Dynasty Warriors 9, which divided the fanbase. Some players appreciated its open-world approach, while others felt it strayed too far from the franchise’s roots. Rather than continuing down a path that might alienate long-time fans, series producer Tomohiko Sho recognized the need for a bold new direction. The emergence of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2020 provided the perfect opportunity, offering unprecedented power that allowed for tens of thousands of enemies to appear on-screen simultaneously—a feature Sho had envisioned since the PlayStation 2 era.
This leap in technology allowed Dynasty Warriors: Origins to fully realize the chaos and scale the franchise has always promised. In previous games, hardware limitations meant only a few hundred enemies could be displayed at a time, but the latest installment harnesses modern capabilities to deliver massive battles like never before. This enhanced performance, however, came at a cost—multiplayer was sacrificed to maintain the game’s high visual fidelity and large-scale encounters. Sho acknowledged the importance of multiplayer to the series but assured fans that it could return in future installments if Origins is well-received.
Despite the long hiatus between mainline entries, Koei Tecmo remained active in the "1 vs 1,000" genre through successful spin-offs. Collaborations with major franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Persona 5, and Fire Emblem helped maintain the studio’s presence in the market, introducing new audiences to the Warriors formula. These spin-offs focused on adapting existing IPs to the action-heavy gameplay, rather than pushing technical boundaries, making Dynasty Warriors: Origins a significant departure by prioritizing performance and scale.
As the franchise looks ahead, Sho is eager to further explore the potential of current hardware. He even expressed interest in expanding the Dynasty Warriors formula beyond historical settings, citing Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings as dream collaborations. While nothing is confirmed, the possibility of such ambitious projects underscores the studio’s commitment to innovation. With Dynasty Warriors: Origins reinvigorating the series, Koei Tecmo is poised to redefine large-scale action gaming once again, proving that even after decades, the franchise still has the potential to evolve.
