The NeverEnding Story: A Wondrous Re-release

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the beloved 1984 family fantasy adventure "The NeverEnding Story" has been rereleased. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, this ambitious German production, filmed in English and partially shot in Vancouver, captivates audiences with its Spielbergian mop haired children, a plethora of wondrous beasts, and enchanting princesses.

The film, which likely influenced the Harry Potter series, is adapted from Michael Ende's popular German children's book "Die Unendliche Geschichte." Despite its title, the film concludes with a happy ending, though the story continued in subsequent franchise installments.

Plot Summary

The narrative centers on a lonely, bullied boy named Bastian (Barret Oliver), who is grieving the recent loss of his mother. His emotionally distant father brusquely advises him to suppress his feelings and move on. One day, Bastian escapes his tormentors and finds refuge in a dusty antiquarian bookshop owned by Mr. Coreander (Thomas Hill). Mr. Coreander introduces him to a captivating book called "The NeverEnding Story," which Bastian borrows. As he hides from his schoolmates, Bastian becomes engrossed in the tale, which unfolds on screen.

In the magical land of Fantasia, a destructive force called the Nothing threatens to destroy everything, causing the young Empress (Tami Stronach) to fall ill. The people of Fantasia turn to a young hero, Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), to save them. Atreyu embarks on a quest to heal the Empress, with unexpected help from Bastian, who discovers he can enter the story himself.

Character Dynamics

The film explores complex character dynamics, particularly through Bastian's relationship with his father and his journey within the book. Bastian's father's emotionally detached demeanor contrasts sharply with the fantastical and emotionally rich world of Fantasia. This contrast underscores Bastian's internal struggle and his quest for emotional resolution following his mother's death.

Atreyu's character serves as a counterpart to Bastian, embodying the bravery and resilience Bastian seeks within himself. Atreyu's journey through Fantasia is filled with trials that mirror Bastian's own emotional challenges. Their intertwined paths highlight themes of courage, self discovery, and the power of imagination.

Visual and Thematic Elements

While this film's fantastical elements may cause its energy to wane once the action leaves the real world, it still boasts impressive design and urgency. The memorable scene where Atreyu’s horse, Artax, sinks into the swamp is particularly gripping. Despite my preference for Rob Reiner’s "The Princess Bride," which blends fantasy with comedy, "The NeverEnding Story" remains a likable and thrilling movie.

The film's visual design is a testament to Petersen's ambitious vision. The creatures and landscapes of Fantasia are vividly brought to life, creating an immersive experience for viewers. The special effects, though dated by today's standards, retain a certain charm and continue to captivate audiences. The film’s design and art direction contribute significantly to its lasting appeal, transporting viewers into a world of wonder and magic.

Mental Health Perspectives

The film also presents an interesting, albeit outdated, perspective on mental health. It serves as a parable for Bastian's journey in coping with his mother's death. Scenes like Artax’s sinking subtly endorse his father's advice: to keep moving forward and not succumb to despair. This message, though reflective of the era’s attitudes towards mental health, invites contemporary audiences to reflect on the importance of processing grief and emotions.

Cultural Impact and Legacy

"The NeverEnding Story" has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Its influence is evident in subsequent fantasy films and literature, most notably the Harry Potter series. The film's imaginative storytelling and richly constructed world have inspired countless creators and continue to resonate with new generations of viewers.

Fans of the film will undoubtedly enjoy revisiting this beloved classic on the big screen. The rerelease offers an opportunity to appreciate the film's enduring charm and its contribution to the fantasy genre. For newcomers, it provides a chance to experience a piece of cinematic history that has captivated audiences for decades.

In celebrating its 40th anniversary, "The NeverEnding Story" reminds us of the timeless allure of fantasy and the power of storytelling. Wolfgang Petersen’s ambitious adaptation of Michael Ende's beloved book invites us to revisit a world where imagination knows no bounds. Despite its fantastical setting, the film touches on universal themes of grief, resilience, and the transformative power of stories, ensuring its place as a cherished classic in the annals of family fantasy adventures.
