Shrewsbury, Massachusetts — Stop & Shop closed stores due to poor performance, and one location food bank reported that the loss of the stores would also influence their company. The Stop & Shop on Route 9 was completely closed on October 31 (Thursday). The Customer would find another grocery store, the Worcester County Food reported to Spectrum News 1 about the closure shortly.
The Worcester County Food Bank called Stop & Shop a long-lasting donor, and high-minded advocate. The food bank earned a donation product from seven local Stop & Shop store locations, however, the number would be eventually decreased to five locations in Shrewsbury, and Lincoln Street in Worcester to completely close their stores.
Worcester County Food Bank CEO Jean McMurray stated that the Shrewsbury location by itself brought over 35,000 pounds of food in the previous year between the store and customer donations. Jean McMurray also explained that Stop & Shop is as strong as ever before and that the loss of close proximity to the Shrewsbury location would be disregarded.
“The impact is significant because not only do they donate product, but their customers donate product. They also collect financial donations for us," said McMurray. "So, we're sorry to see them go and we wish them continued success, but it does mean that we will be receiving less food donations from Stop & Shop, and we're all about distributing as much donated food as possible.”
The Worcester County Food Bank arranged to send a truck to the Shrewsbury’s Stop & Shop on November 1 (Friday) to grab the frozen and nonperishable food items. McMurray stated it is a little of an entire rotation moment as the Worcester County Food Bank sent a truck about 26 years ago to keep the food product from the store at the Route 9 location prior to Stop & Shop being transferred. The food bank was expected the community could support to bridge the gap and give a discourse to the location of food security.
