Innovative Design Highlights the Power of Creativity and Sustainability in Fashion

A talented sixth form student, Tabitha, from Ribston Hall High School in Gloucester, has made it to the finals of the prestigious Junk Kouture competition a global youth event focused on sustainable fashion. The competition challenges participants aged 12 to 19 to create wearable art using 100% recyclable materials.

Tabitha's creative journey began when she noticed old vertical blinds in her classroom. Inspired by the discarded material, she broke down the rigid blinds into strips, giving the fabric movement and airiness, ideal for crafting a unique dress. Her design also features a glamorous hat, adding drama and an elegant couture feel to the ensemble.

Tabitha, who aspires to pursue a career in fashion, is one of 10 UK students who will compete in the international Junk Kouture Finals, with the event location yet to be announced. Reflecting on her experience, she shared her excitement about the opportunity to highlight sustainability and couture on a global platform.

Her teacher, Nikkie Finch, initially skeptical of the design, expressed pride in Tabitha’s work, praising her dedication and creativity. Junk Kouture's Katie Brill also lauded the design, saying it is "fit for the runway" and that young creatives like Tabitha can inspire change by viewing waste as a valuable resource for tomorrow's textiles.
