Merino Wool Takes Center Stage in Eco Friendly Fashion Design

An 18 year old designer from Witney, Oxfordshire, Alexandra Burch, has won the prestigious Wool4School Young Fashion Designer competition. Partnered with the University of the Arts London (UAL), the contest tasked participants with creating garments from sustainable fabrics, focusing on merino wool and inspired by the natural elements of earth, water, fire, and air.

Burch chose water as her theme and designed garments featuring deep blues and golds. She explored various ways to use wool, noting its versatility in creating sustainable fashion. "Wool is a renewable fiber," she explained, calling it "a really good material" for eco friendly clothing. Through her research, she discovered that wool is frequently used in athletic wear due to its durability.

Burch's designs were also influenced by the 1960s hippie movement, blending retro silhouettes with modern sustainability. Her passion for fashion sustainability is evident in her approach, encouraging others to "re wear your clothes again and again." She also finds inspiration in local charity shops, enjoying the thrill of discovering unique, eco-friendly pieces.

Currently working as an assistant seamstress, Burch is planning to further her studies in fashion, exploring universities for next year.
